UV = Ultraviolet light, which is radiation with wavelength shorter than visible light. Since UV wavelengths is shorter than visible -- the purple you describe is more like near-UV (400-200 nm). Have a look in Wikipedia, they have a good explanation.
uv stands for ultraviolet, standard lights that you see in businesses , schools and what not. for the purple color you might be thinking of black lights.
