I don't know why you would want to use soda cans but You can hold them in place with bobby pins. Just put them through your hair and clip them on the soda can opening.
I dido rubber bands but use hair elastics instead. It'd take huge hair clips to go around the cans.
My local fire department regularly tests smoke detectors, both the ionizing and the photo type, and they use an aerosol spray. You might be able to borrow a can from your local fire dept. If not, here are some directions sources.
