Question:

What kinda Bit do you think this is?!?!?

What kinda Bit do you think this is?!?!?

Answer:

That's a full cheek snaffle. it'd just be called a copper full-cheek snaffle, or perhaps a copper roller if the copper is in circles that spin when the horse tongues them. Yes, it's a great bit for training young horses (or any horse for that matter) but remember that a bit as harsh as the hands holding the reins. ADD-- Amanda, sorry but you are completely wrong. I wouldn't let that twisted piece of crap within 10 feet of a horse in training unless I was deliberately trying to make it hard-mouthed. The snaffle is the traditional training bit. never heard any respectable professional say otherwise. You should always start a horse in either a snaffle or with no bit at all.
It's a full cheek snaffle, only difference is that your's has a copper mouthpiece. They are good for training and the full cheeks keep the bit from being pulled through the horse's mouth and also help aid with turning.
This is a Full Cheek Snaffle it works like a normal snaffle, but has the bars on each side to prevent the bit from being pulled through the horses mouth when you pull on one rein. The are commonly used for training horses that don't bend laterally (bend their neck) when you pull on one rein or don't want to respond to direct reining. It also puts pressure on the outside of the face (if you pull on the left rein the bar on the right side will push on the right side of the face). Copper on a bit induces salivation and helps to keep the horses mouth softer. I like copper bits for in general for training or broke horses, but I prefer to use an egg but or loose ring snaffle for training unless the horse presents with the problems I mentioned before and then I only use it for as long as I need to to fix the problem then go back to a normal snaffle because I want them to give to the pressure on the inside bars (of the mouth not the bit) not moving away from pressure on the outside of their mouth and don't want them to rely on the cheeks of the snaffle for control. But if it is what you have, yes it will work for training. Good Luck ADD: Wow Amanda who told that was a good training bit. That bit is designed to be used on a finished barrel horse that tends to drop it's shoulder going into the pocket and should not be used on a horse that has not been taught how to respond to a bit. It is also only allowed to be used in pattern racing events, any bit with a twist or a hackamore (except for bosels on babies) are not allowed in showing events. Perhaps your gelding is stubborn out of self preservation. Do him a favor and get educated on how bits work and how horses learn.
