I need to replace an old sofa bed and I've never purchased one before. I know both the bed and the mattress must be good quality for it to be comfortable, and I know it'll be a little pricey - but what are the specific things I should be looking for or asking about? Huge thanks.
The main thing that makes a sofa bed uncomfortable is the bar that hits most people in the back. They have sofa beds now that moves that bar and you make it up from the side instead of from the usual top or bottom. IF you can't find one of these then get a Memory foam liner to put on it when you make it into a bed
Quality is everything. The more you are willing to spend will get you a better sofa bed but there are some things to consider. A great mattress on the sofa bed is important. Lay on the sofa bed. If you feel bars don't buy it. The thickness of the bed's mattress will be very important. That is it. It is no different than choosing a mattress for your regular bed. If you are not comfortable on a sofa bed, it's the wrong bed. And the sofa itself has to be comfortable. Try all your choices out and you will find the answer.
A mattress with inner springs is more likely to be comfortable. I add a comfy pad too when guests are expected. I would avoid the foam mattresses as they tend to be cheap and break down quickly. No one likes sleeping feeling that nasty bar in their back.

We have a sofa bed, and it seems no matter how you lay you can feel that metal rod in your back, straight thru the mattress! I got a memory foam topper on sale at Elder Beerman's a while back, it was kinda pricey (about $90) but it was soooo worth it. Your back will thank you, especially if you or someone else is sleeping on the sofa bed more than one night. I got a relatively thick one with little triangle-looking things jutting up. Its quite thick so it doesn't fold in with the sofa, so storage is kind of a b*tch, but still worth it. Good luck!
