what makes things like soap and aluminum foil and cups kosher? do they have to be kosher? why? why do they even have a kosher symbol (hechsher)?

When I worked in a restaurant I was told that in order for food products and items to be kosher a rabbi has to bless them in the place where they are made I know from growing up and attending school with jewish classmates that jewish food is made as per jewish dietary law.
