Question:

What Navy Ship is this?

My papaw was a sailor during world war two, and he was on a ship that sunk.He tried to tell me what the ship‘s name was, (he said the USS Alamo), and he said that it was sunk by some Germans. It sunk in the Mediterranean in 1943. It was an Iron Ore ship, with 22 sailors that defended it. Oh, and if it helps, my Papaw ended up in a hospital in Albany, New York, October 16.

Answer:

It seems it was not sunk. The only Alamo I could find was the Alamo Victoryand it was run by Weyerhauser. Perhaps it was damaged.can tell for sure it was not hit by a U boat or would have turned up a site dedicated to them. The crew size is close to the 8 officers and 29 crew on board a ship a Grand Uncle was on when hit off Florida in May 42.
