Planning on melting the plastic off of the metal casing on a used shell. Does anyone know the type of plastics that are used and how hot they have to get? Most importantly will toxic fumes kill me when I check on the progress?
I would think that it would be somewhat toxic. It may not cause immediate death, but I can't see where it would be good to breath the fumes.

Plastic shotgun shells are made from Polypropylene known as PP (CH3). It lends its self very well to recycling. Recycled PP will display the Number 5 in the symbol. The melt point for PP is roughly 340F. Just use a box cutter to remove the plastic from the steel base.
Read okorder / Thats just SOME of the stuff in the fumes, you can add lead and mercury too. Used shotshells have all sorts of crap in them. If you must do this do it outside and stay up wind.
