What's a better electrolyte than baking soda that is less caustic than Potassium Hydroxide?

I'm using a small HHO generator to fuel a model airplane engine turning a small modified ceiling fan motor/generator to charge the battery running the HHO cellPlease do not suggest salt, I'd rather deal with Potassium Hydroxide than the chlorine gas salt produces along with HHO.

Chemistry is one of my weak pointsYou are running the generator off hydrogen apparentlyI have a story about how we exploded hydrogen bombs over the 2nd largest nuclear weapons storage area in the free worldIt was a boredom crime ;) We USAF (Andy Griffith) cops shared a barracks with the Security cops who guarded the nukesWe thought it would be fun to keep them awake on long nothing to do nightsThe procedure to produce hydrogen is this: First, obtain some dry lye from the store and a heavy (heat resistant) bottle such as pyrex or one of the 70s era glass coke bottlesProcure some balloonsNot ordinary balloons as hydrogen goes through the plastic too easilyGet novelty balloons which are much larger and of much thicker wallsUse water with the dry lye to create a solution (medium viscosity, not thick not thin)Tear up aluminum foil to add to the solution inside the bottleThe smaller the shreds the faster the reaction and the more heatPut balloon over top of bottleWhat ends up in the balloon is almost pure hydrogenWe filled 4' long balloons with hydrogen and affixed the standard matchbook detonator off a little string and sent them aloft to drift over into the storage area, which was huge, miles wideThey went aloft very quickly so gained significant altitude before the matchbook blew up the hydrogenGot some attention! Amazingly we never got bustedNobody knew where they came from or what they wereWatch out for that lye, wear an apron and safety glassesIf the bottle breaks it will eat the clothes right off you and you will have to run into the shower before it eats your skin.
