Question:

What's wrong with my boiler?

I have a Heat Line Compact boiler which is firing up about every 3 minutes when the heating is on. It comes on for less than 1 minute 10 seconds at which point the temp reading is showing 80 degrees, then it shuts off for around 1 minute 40 seconds (temp only drops to 50 degrees). It cycles like this for as long as the heating is on.Is this normal? It makes a racket every time it fires up (waking me up every 3 minutes!) Is there no way to set it to stay on for the duration? Thanks :o)

Answer:

Sounds as though you have no circulation.Boiler temp limit and the gauge your looking at are not in the same location so you cant depend on gauge reading is the same as what the boiler temp limit is seeing. Check your circulator pump or if any valves have been closed.
your limit switches need adjusting if you do not know what limit switches are do not touch your boiler , a wrong adjustment could turn your boiler into a bomb blow your house up call, a plumber
This sounds like a circulation problem ie pump clogged ,stuck or just plain busted. Its a good place to start.
This is not normal. It sounds like there is a problem with the contact inside the boiler. Have the unit serviced. There could be a problem with the thermostat, or even too much pressure in the system due to a bad expansion tank or a bad pressure sensor. You don't want further problems with the extensions of the system developing leaks. Their could be simple fixes to any of these problems. Have you bled the system recently? Air locks or bubbles can do this stuff also. Air locks can burn up your circulating pumps. Have it serviced.
The boiler may be on a Frost setting which means that during very cold weather the boiler will come on for short periods just to prevent the central heating water from freezing up. It is mainly used when people leave the house empty during very cold weather.
