what type of bedrock is toronto? More like what types of rock make up the bed rock in toronto?
Mainly dolomite, with some layers of lignite and trilobyte.
That's a good question. Toronto is where I live. Briefly, here's the history. We are on a sedimentary bedrock. If you dig down far enough to get to the bedrock what you will find for Toronto's foundation is primarily the Georgian Bay Shale (west and central Toronto) and the Whitby shale(east Toronto) , which is a fossil-bearing rock 440 million years old. Close to the lake itself will be an increase in the limestone content in the bedrock. The last glacier advanced and retreated several times and was a mile and a half thick. As it moved it scraped and bulldozed across the area (now Toronto) it totally eroded away the bedrock. Soil and rock were transported, ground up and mixed together creating a hard, packed, rocky mixture of boulders, sand, silt and clay known as till. As the glacier receded, till was deposited across the entire area. The original lake extended much further north and was back filled. The land was built up and that is where the southern part of the city sits today. Lake Ontario sits in a depression in the underlying bedrock of limestone and shale, relatively young and soft rocks which are exposed in a few locations along the shore. Along most of
