In the immediate future, I think it'll be bio-fuels (algae, grease, ethanol etc), electric and fuel cells. There are still a few kinks that need to be worked out with each method; however I think the technology is here to make each possible. Who knows what the distant future holds; maybe we'll be using antimatter, dilithium crystals, or even fusion reactors. Maybe it will even be some new undiscovered power source!
compressed air the most inefficient engine ever invented, NO hho The compund HHO doesn't exist, so NO electric, where will the electricity come from? algae Maybe ethanol A very inefficient fuel to make, NO gas Natural gas has limits to, but a good choice. propane This comes from natural gas, it is an extension of natural gas. fuel cells, very inefficient, NO
Hydrogen fuel cells. Burn 100% clean. Additionally, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe.
I agree the hydrogen fuel cell is at this time said to be the fuel of the future. HHO or Browns gas as it is also known - does exist and has for many years but until recently very expensive to produce. It can now be produced with 12 volts electricity at about 20 amps. Several automobiles use it to supplement gasoline with varying improvements in gas mileage. The exhaust from HHO is pure - very pure - water. HHO gas cutting torches are available commercially and posses some amazing properties such as cutting metal in enclosed areas with no ill results. Methane gas is another useful energy source. Methane collected from compost piles is being used as fuel.
