Question:

When Drawing a Lewis Structure for AlCl3 is there a double bond?

When drawing the lewis structure for AlCl3 do you need one double bond to complete the octet on Aluminum? There are a total of 24 valence electronsso would one of the chlorines form a double bond with the aluminum? For some reason in my notes I have 3 single bonds leaving aluminum with only 6 electronsI can't figure out why.

Answer:

I would say leave it with the three single bondsMost element don't actually conform to the octect ruleDouble bonds will introduce formal charges which isn't something that you want.
If your baking them in the oven, lower your oven temperature by 25F degrees, You might have to cook them a bit longer alsoTo totally avoid hard edges, you could bake them in a water bath, but I am really unsure how they would turn outWater baths are generally used for baking cheesecake and custardsThe pan goes into a larger pan which is then filled with hot water that come about 1/2 way up the smaller baking pan or custard cupsYou could always cut off the hard edges and let someone in your household who like them, eat themI like those chewy bits.
