Question:

When should a gas steam boiler shut down...what should the pressure be on the gauge when it shuts down.?

In the morning, it takes my gas steam boiler sometime to reach the desired thermostat temp. i.e. it goes down to 60 degrees at 11pm and it turns back on at 7am to 68 degrees. Today it's 34 degrees out and it's been recycling when the pressure gauge in PSI reaches about 2.5lbs. it shuts down for about 5 minutes and when the pressure drops to about 1lb it kicks back on. So right now it's 8:45am and after being on since 7am the temp in the house is only 66degrees. The house is a dutch colonial 3 floors and a basement..about 1800sq. feet. it's getting there but Its cold out and my house is pretty air tight..new windows etc insulation is good. There is the limit control that is set to .1......(cut in cut out)....can I raise that so that the unit will shut down at a higher PSI..like 5 instead od 2.5?

The setting of 1 lb. on and 2.5 off gives you a 1 and one half pound differential. Yes you can raise the differential between on and off and also raise the upper cut off point to 5 pounds like you said. But if your radiators are getting hot at your highest level that may not solve your problem. There is nothing wrong with using higher pressure settings and wider on and off differential but remember you probably have a (Low Pressure boiler) that has a safety relief valve that will relieve at 15 Lbs. Also if the system is very old then the old pipes will be under greater pressures and leaks may show up. It is not uncommon to operate at a little higher range but some older systems lower the pressure ranges because of the small leaks around the system. You have a controller to set on your boiler you can raise it to 5 pounds and then make sure the other device the Limit control is set at a pressure just above the controller setting of 5 to lets say about 8 lbs. that will cut it off before the pressure relief setting of 15 lbs. These usually will have to be manually reset if pressure rises above it's setting. But I would suggest that you try working with the time on and time off cycle of your programmer and bring it on earlier on colder days of winter and add a parallel low temperature outside air sensing thermostat that will over-ride the off time when the Outside air gets below an extremely cold temp.
