I think DC would be easier than AC. Some motors are available from McMaster-Carr, W.W. Grainger, etc. You don't need as much horsepower from electric motors as you do from internal combustion engines.
first how big a car are you going to build or are you going to try to set a land speed record. two where are you going to find a electric cord long enough to run the car. electric cars are DC NOT AC. the smaller the car the smaller the HP needed you could run a old VW bug on a 15 hp dc motor. the smaller the car the smaller the motor the smaller the battries needed. think small. with DC motors the more power in the higher the HP till something smokes.
1 HP = 745.699872 watts so for at 65HP you will need 48,425 watts that is a lot of electricity. 1 watt =1 Amp x 1 volt. At 110 volts that is about 440 Amp more than enough to kill someone so please be careful.
