Question:

Where do the brackets go in this calculation? Where do the brackets go in this calculation?

15 - 4 x 2 +1 3I have no idea, and how do you work it out? Thanks

Answer:

15 - (4 x (2 +1)) You need the two sets of brackets 15 take away 4 times (2 plus 1) So if you look at it backwards you have 3 (2 + 1) x 4 (12) to be taken away from 15 If you didn't have the bracket before the 4 then it would be 15 - 4 (which is 11) x (2 +1) , which is 3 so the answer would be 33 (And you need the second closed bracket at the end to even up the amount of open brackets to the amount of closed brackets) By putting things in brackets you're asking for the sum in brackets to be used as a whole and then added to, taken away etc from / to etc, the number before the brackets.
