Mid 17th century to late 18th century some iron was imported from Sweden and Russia, it wasn't until the furnace technology for extracting iron from ore improved that Britain became an exporter of iron. Since more (by weight) coal than iron ore was needed to extract iron, ironworks tended to be near coal producing areas (especially those near rivers or sea for ease of delivery). Other coal producing areas were in Nottinghamshire and Kent.
