where is the best place in europe to take a weekend break for a christmas market/shopping experience?

There are a multitude of possibilities - what's best for you depends on your interests. I live in northern Italy and always go to the Christmas markets in Bolzano and Trento in the Dolomites - they're especially nice this year and there's a lot of snow, so it's spectacular scenery. Last weekend, I went to the Christmas market in Tivoli in Copenhagen because I was looking for something specific that I had gotten there before. You can easily spend all day just in the park at the market. There are lots of vendors and the amusements and restaurants are all open. There is one building with Christmas animations that's good. Copenhagen has some interesting window displays in the shopping area, and there's another smaller market in Nyhavn . and of course, there are all the normal attractions are there. Another good destination is Prague. There are several markets. The one in the old town is particularly large and interesting. While you're there try the honey wine and trdelnik to stay warm. Vienna has an excellent Christmas market in front of the city hall. If you go there, be sure to go inside the building too and see the children's activities that are set up there. I was talking with someone at work yesterday who said the Christmas market in Munich is very nice again this year. Another one that I've been to in the past that was very good is in Aachen, Germany.
Gosh, depends what you are shopping for! If you are wanting Christmas decorations or just to get in that Holiday mood, then there are few places in this world better than Bavaria! Rothenburg, Munich, any southern German city would be amazing, but those are my favorites. Clothing, someone hit Rome.one word, FANTASTIC Any big city has something offer, but for me Europe is Old World and I want to feel that way at Christmas time. I would go to the Rothenburg Aud Taber for the Christmas markets!
