For the best answers, search on this site shorturl.im/mnoAw mistur_b is hitting the nail on the head. It indeed sounds like you have an old Federal Pacific panel in use. This is a very serious fire and electrical shock hazard. I recommend getting a Professional Electrician to the house asap. There is no price that can be put on your family's lives or the value of your belonging. Whoever pays for it, be you or the landlord, the whole panel really needs to be replaced. Included is information on identifying a FPE Welding panel. P.S. - Please don't try to perform maintenance or repair on any portion of this particular problem. In some cases with these panels even when the breaker is switched to the open position, power is still being supplied to the circuit.
There may well be a breaker on the wall above the unit, but most times the circuit breaker is simply in your house's breaker box-- will usually be labeled, if not, look for a double breaker that is off as compared to the rest of the breaker switches and flip it back on. Mine pops off when we get brown-outs due to high power demand - over 100 degrees so the power grid is not strong enough to meet demand. I don't know of any units where you would have to take off a panel on the unit itself- check the breaker in the main breaker box first, then if no prob there, check to see if there is an outside breaker. Generally just flipping the switch back on solves the problem
The metal box outside near the the outdoor condensing unit is called a Disconnect. It is installed there for safety reasons it allows a TECH to turn off power going to the unit to make repairs. They sometimes contain breakers, sometimes they have fuses, but more then likely it has a black plastic knob with copper buss bars attached that you can pull out and push in to keep high voltage from getting to the unit so a TECH can work safely. Your AC breaker is located in you electrical box with your other breakers. its usually a 30 or 40 amp breaker doubled up if its tripped you need to turn it off and then flip it back on. If it trips again leave it alone and call a tech there's a serious issue. Reasons a breaker trips Fan is shorted out (call a tech) Compressor is shorted out (call a tech) A wire is burnt and shorted causing a possible hazard. (call a tech) bad breaker or bad electrical box (call a electrician) Brown outs very seldom. Folks if your don't have a clue what your talking about please don't give advice out about electrical objects. It could cause someone some serious damage or even kill them form the bad information.
