Just mine in Area 4 of the first place you received - Moga Woods. You'll see little outcroppings of minerals in the cave (don't forget to bring a torch!) that will give you iron ore about 30% of the time. To get to Area 4 go to Area 1 then Area 3, then in between the two halves of Area 3 will be the entrance to Area 4.
