Strange, but I would buy a new one if that's the case. Maybe it wasn't leaking that bad though, not enough to cause any harm, which is a good thing, and a good thing someone caught it in time.
Do you mean chirping, or the full siren going off? If chirping, and that's what it sounds like, it's simple: change the batteries. If the full siren is going off, you have a different problem. Also difficult to diagnose the issue without knowing if your detectors are interconnected, although I suspect not, since if they were, then all would go off (if in full siren mode) when one goes off.Also, when you say disconnect it from the mains,, that implies a hard-wired siren, and these are usually interconnected so that if one goes off they all go off. So, to be honest, this is a confusing question unless you provide more information! But start with the batteries, no matter what.
