Question:

Which way is better to install steel posts for a fence, pounding them in or cementing?

i am having a fence installed, i have quotes from 2 different contractors... one pounds the posts into the ground, the other cements each post into the ground, how deep either go i am not sure... but which way would be more secure long term? the posts are the same as used for a chain link fence (steel posts)... thanks

Answer:

Depending on your climate you have to set the posts in concrete below the frost line.Post in concrete will last at least fifty years.
Cement 4 sure..pounding them in is weak...not to even mention the added risk of breaking a gas line due to not being able to see what you are doing. Think about it ...with cement you have the added weight for strength...pounding them alone is weak.
Cementing the posts in the ground will hold longer. My Dad put up fencing all his life and this was his preferred method. He was always pointing out fences that he put up 20 or more years before.
Dig hole pour in cement and then set the post always good Idea to sink post into ground a ways so it will stand up while cement dries this is the best way. Cheapest and easiest way is get big hammer and drive into ground but those fences have bad habit of falling over.
id go with the cement.. if it wasnt too expensive. if you were using t-posts for barbed wire id pound them in.
