Question:

Which wood floor is better, real hardwoods, or engineered?

I have 2 small dogs and one big dog, which one would be the best? do they scratch easy? I defiantly don't want laminate, it looks too cheap.

Answer:

I have dogs and kids and went with laminate because it is sturdier. I stabbed my laminate with a fork, and it didn't budge. I know most of them don't look as good, but if you shop around, you can find a good looking laminate. My neighbor has awesome laminate wood where the planks are beveled and it gives the floor a much more realistic look. If you go with hardwood or engineered, be prepared to sand it down and refinish in a few years, unless you want to go for that lived in rustic look.
They would both scratch the same, the engineered floors have a thin layer of wood, over a cheaper wood, and cannot be sanded and refinished. I would opt for the hardwood, it can be refinshed numerous times. We have red oak in our house, he main part of the house has been refinished once, in 32 years. I use area rugs, where it gets the most wear. Washable ones.
Hi, Hardwoods can be sanded if needed whereas engineered cannot. My dogs normal activity does not scratch my oak hardwood but when my son wrestles with the dog it does. We are going for the rustic look and do not worry about every little scratch as stuff happens. My neighbor has hardwood upstairs and laminate down and he says that the laminate does not get scratched by the dog. Every little mark bothers him so hardwood is not for him and he prefers tile or laminate. Hope this helps.
