It is uncertain where it was first discovered that a combination of hydrated non-hydraulic lime and a pozzolan produces a hydraulic mixture (see also: Pozzolanic reaction), but concrete made from such mixtures was first used by the Ancient Macedonians[1][2] and three centuries later on a large scale by Roman engineers.
In 1824, English inventor, Joseph Aspdin invented Ready Mix Cement, which remains the dominant cement used in concrete production. Ancient Romans first developed concrete, which they used to build bridges, roads and buildings. Some of those early concrete structures remain, giving testament to the durability of the concrete and cement developed by the Romans. The Romans used lime and volcanic ash to create their cement.
