Ferrosilicon alloy. The sheet material rolled with silicon steel is the most widely used soft magnetic material in the field of electrical engineering. Therefore, silicon steel sheet is also called electrical steel sheet. Silicon steel sheets are widely used in motors, generators, transformers, chokes, electromagnetic devices, relays and measuring instruments.Influence of silicon content on properties of silicon steel sheet. Silicon is a good deoxidizer for steel. It combines with oxygen to convert oxygen into a stable, non carbon reduced SiO2, avoiding lattice distortion of iron by doping oxygen atoms. Silicon becomes a solid solution in alpha iron, increasing resistivity and helping to separate harmful impurities from carbon. Therefore, the iron containing impurities into silicon can increase the permeability, reduce the coercivity and losses, but with the increase of silicon content and make the material brittle and hard, decreased thermal conductivity and toughness against thermal and mechanical processing, the general silicon steel sheet of silicon containing no more than 4.5%.
Cold rolled silicon steel sheet or grain oriented silicon steel sheet, also known as Goss texture steel sheet, was first made by cold rolling method of N.P. Goss in 1934. It has fine magnetic properties along the rolling direction. The grain oriented textured steel sheet not only has high saturation magnetic flux density and low iron loss in the strong magnetic field, but also has good magnetism in the weak magnetic field (large initial permeability). This is because the cold rolling process reduces the impurity content in the steel sheet and causes the coarse grain in the steel sheet. The coarse grain assembly increases permeability and reduces hysteresis loss. The cold rolled steel sheet makes the cubic edge of the grain (the most easily magnetized direction) arranged along the rolling direction, which is beneficial to the magnetization. This material is called a single oriented silicon steel sheet. It is also possible to manufacture a silicon steel sheet with multi directions and easy magnetization (i.e., non oriented silicon steel sheet).
Carbon, sulfur, and oxygen are considered to be the three evils in silicon steel sheets. These elements will increase the coercive force of soft magnetic material, and increase the hysteresis loss of silicon steel sheet. In addition, too much nitrogen can also hinder grain growth, resulting in hysteresis loss and coercivity increase. Too much aluminum (more than 0.5%) of silicon steel sheet is too brittle and difficult to process. Therefore, we should eliminate the impurities which have bad influence on the silicon steel sheet.
A large number of silicon steel sheets with a thickness of 0.35 ~ 0.50mm are used in the motor industry. 0.05~0.20mm thin strip steel is used in telecommunication high frequency technology so as to reduce eddy current loss more effectively. Hot rolled silicon steel sheet thickness is 0.35 ~ 0.50mm, the density is 7.55 ~ 7.70g/cm3, for large, medium and small AC and DC motor; cold rolled non oriented silicon steel sheet thickness is 0.35 ~ 0.50mm, the density is 7.65 ~ 7.75g/cm3, used for large AC generator, motor, large, medium and small AC and DC motor; single cold rolling oriented silicon steel sheet thickness is 0.35mm, the density is 7.65g/cm3, used for power transformer, reactor, magnetic amplifier; 0.05 ~ 0.20mm thickness of cold rolled thin single orientation belt, used for radio frequency transformer
