Question:

Why are spokes used (and always have been used) on bicycles more than a solid wheel?

Why are spokes used (and always have been used) on bicycles more than a solid wheel?

Answer:

I rather not get to specific too much on my best dishes, as they are secrets, and rather wait until I publish a cookbook before revealing them, but the not so secret stuff, well, I enjoy the pizza I make from scratch! I even make the dough from scratchNow I just need to time the cutting right so that the cheese don't slide off when I go to cut! LOL! I also enjoy baked pasta, even baked mac'n'cheeseI only done that a couple times I made flour tortilla from scratch a few timesEven converted them into baked tortilla chipsI plan to someday to try and make salsa from scratchI made biscuits from scratch, and though they did not rise, I still enjoyed themI found when I bake something or do tortillas, to cut the baking powder and baking soda by half or else, well, to me anyway, they taste too baking soda-y or powderyNot to brag or anything, but I enjoy my pizza just as much as the pizzeriaAnd I made some pretty good sweet tea a few times as well! :) I might make sweet potato pie this Christmas or Thanksgiving.
My best dishes are-Entree- chicken and dumplings Veg or side- Caesar Salad Dessert- Peanut Butter Pie I cook a lot- and love food- so my favorite to eat is anything someone else is cooking.
I make a great pea soup, but I am the only one to appreciate itMy wife hates the stuff so much that I have to prepare it while she is at work, and remove all evidence of the cooking operation by the time she gets homeI usually eat a couple of bowl of it then and hide the remaining three or so more in the freezer.
There are many reasons to this, weight and aerodynamics are just two of themOf primary consideration is strengthA spoked wheel would be stronger than a solid wheel by many multiplesspokes minimize the material while a solid wheel would actually need more mass just to hold itself upYou can only make a solid piece of metal so thin before it no longer is able to support even itself Consider a piece of aluminum foil versus a piece of 1mm thick aluminum sheetThe sheet is far stronger and maintains its shape than the foil but as it increases in size it will eventually take on the same characteristics as the foil which will require the addition of more material to maintain rigidityBy placing a wheel under tension such as with spokes the entire structure becomes much stronger.
