Hello Matt. Everyone is in agreement that they will go bad, but no one is stating why or what happens. Two things occur. First, and most common, the seal on the neck will go bad, allowing the pressure to drop. No force for the fire retardent chemicals to be pushed out. The second problem is when you allow an ABC type fire extinguisher to simply sit untouched, the powder base will compact in the bottom of the canister, turning it semi solid, which means although you may have presssure in the extinguisher, nothing will come out the nozzle except air. One thing every homeowner should do is turn the extinguisher over a couple of times ( shake it) every 4 to 6 months. It will help keep the chemical base from compacting. This is the main reason why commercial fire extinguishers have expiration dates posted on them. It shows the last date it was filled, which is usually only a year long. If you buy a decent commercial extinguisher, you can have it refilled, reinspected and resealed annually by companies that do this for a living. Most of them charge under $25 per unit. If you buy the smaller homeowner style, it cannot be refilled. The best you can do is shake it every couple of months and monitor the pressure guage, but you are taking a huge risk of it being operational just when you might need it the most it you allow it to sit for a couple of years thinking you have a sense of security owning one in the house.
