Why is it, at most, only at 0.999 or 0.9999? What is that other 0.001 or 0.0001 percent?
If the gold processing really wanted to they probably could, though it would not be practical. Gold at very high purity is soft like lead. When gold is made in to bars for storage or to be transported copper and or zinc is alloyed to give it some rigidity. Anyway 99.999% pure is 100% pure for any real need. Getting any metal 100% pure is very difficult and expensive and really not worth it.
