I can think of a handful of characters on that show that I dislike more than him. I actually kind of like him. Why is he consistently considered the worst character on that show?
Some people might call him a male version of a Mary Sue character.
He's just kind of a weeny. I can't even explain it. I don't dislike him but I find his character pretty boring and one-dimensional. He doesn't fit in with the cast or the story lines, and the ones written for him are dumb. And that whole wanderer guy christening him as some special creature just made it even dumber.
I'd count myself as ambivalent. I guess the same reason people hated Ewoks and Jar Jar something in Star Wars, it was seen as demeaning and lowering the 'seriousness' story of the series and was done instead as a prop meant to attract kids instead of adults.

probably because it was ridiculous the way he'd step in and save the day despite being surrounded by more experienced and often very intelligent people who should've been more able to solve the problem. He was a genius but he lacked experience so it just seemed ridiculous. Though I bet it probably didn't happen as often as I remember it now!
