If you used unpurified water polluted with oil and foreign metals in a boiler, what happens?
Everthing boils. When water boils at 212 degrees F. it turns into pure (water) steam . Anything that boils higher than this temperature is left behind as either a liquid or a solid. Oil for instance boils at a higher temperature and would be left behind as a liquid. The foreign metals would remain solid and also left behind. Hence your boiler would eventually fill up with a big mess in the bottom. The real danger is things that boil at a LOWER temperature than water. These flow out as steam into the same piping as you wanted the (water) steam go. If the steam is driving a turbine, for example, these impurities WILL damage (or corrode) it.
Excessive concentration of hydrocarbons may cause the boiler to explode; Hard water deposits create 'scaling', a nuisance particularly at valves, pipe narrows and downstream filters; negative ions (commonly chlorine) can corrode metal pipes (as can positive ions depending on pipe material). Don't cut corners with boiler maintenance.
I do not know what you mean by foreign metals I assume this should be foreign materials. There would be a potential for solids to build up on the heat transfer surface raising the tube temperature leading to early failure. A variety of pollutants could lead to corrosion and tube failure. Some of the oil would be vaporised with the steam, the rest would coat the heat transfer surface with similar effects to solid buildup.
This is for heating use and not for consumption use, I take it? I'd guess that it's possibly because: The foreign materials could clog the pipes up by getting lodged in them and thus reduce the CSA of the pipe and possibly producing over-pressure / under flow situation. There's also the possibility that the pipes would corrode from the inside out due to the metals flowing in the liquid (as dislike metals tend to oxidise one or the other).
