Therefore, the ore needs to be transported large distances by barge or by train before being transferred to ocean going ships. It then goes to a smelter where the iron oxides are reduced to iron which requires enormous energy expediture. Scrap iron on the other hand, may be slightly rusty but requires relatively little treatment to change it into material for re-use. Besides, scrap iron is obtained largely from established population centres that are closer to iron smelters.
