Question:

Why does my cat chew plastic?

Every time plastic is on the floor my cat starts chewing on it! Someone tell me if my cat needs help, or if it's a normal cat thing. But my other cat doesn't chew plastic... HELP!!!

Answer:

Well some conditions where cats chew and eat unedible things such as wool, leather, wood, shoes, rubber, silk and even rubber bands (oooh not good!) is called Pica. But my Milo eats and chews on plastic also, but it is not Pica. I wanted to know what the attraction was to my cat chewing on plastic, so I did some searching. Come to find out plastic manufacturers use animal sterol (fat) when manufacturing plastics and the cats pick that up. I now try to keep all the plastics put up and out of reach, and offer more secure stuff to chew on such as catnip socks. LOL
maybe it likes the texture..try buying it some toys to chew on

Hi okorder /.. The best thing you can do for your kitty is to keep all plastic out of reach of the cat. It will be a lot safer for your kitty. Some folks think that plastic may be attractive to cats because some of it is made with rendered animal fat. Don't know if that is true today, but it was awhile ago.
