Why does the fan motor on my AC unit keep going out?

Our motor went out a week ago. I bought a new one and my friend replaced it. It worked about 5 minutes and the cool air came on and then the fan just quit again. Is it hooked up wrong? Did we ruin the new motor? Is there another underlying cause????

need more info,what type unit you have,what type and size motor you replaced and the type and size of the new one,what size of run capacitor does it take and what size is being used now,how many speeds is the new one and what speed it was hooked up to. if you get me this info i will be glad to try and help you get to the root of your problem

You don't say whether it is the indoor blower motor or the outdoor condensor fan motor. Either way the motor is probably a split capacitor motor. The capacitor should be replaced anytime the motor is replaced. If you did not replace the capacitor, it may be a problem with the capacitor's electrical rating.
