They were mostly former privateers who were left jobless and desperate when England decided they no longer needed them, and they turned to what they knew best in order to survive. They were somewhat politically motivated as well (hence Blackbeard's ship, and several others, being named The Queen Anne's Revenge, etc.).
The Captain of the Sea Shepard is really a big wanna be. He is really something else and I wonder how he gets away with being a Sea Pirate ? He actually taunts the Japanese Whale Vessels. If you look closely at it you will see it is not the Jolly Roger pirates flew but an interpretation of it. It has a Shepard's staff which represents the Shepard Conservation Society. A trident that represents Neptune's who was the protector of those who live in the sea. The skull represents the death humans inflict on creatures of the sea. The skull has a yin and yang symbol of a dolphin and whales together. I think what he is doing some of you might not agree with but they are slaughtering whales in our backyard and breaking international law by pretending it is Scientific Research which we all know is BS so someone has to look out for them.
