Question:

Why is my car alarm going off about every half hour?

I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra that has about 94,000 miles on it It started to go off on Wednesday. I wonder if my battery is dying and maybe that is why the alarm keeps going off. Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks!

Answer:

Got Cats? I had one car alarm that was so sensitive that when a cat jumped on the hood it would go off! But that situation was self correcting - after about 3 day the cat learned to stay off the car! Still did not prevent it from going off during thunderstorms though! As mike mentioned check the door switches, hood switch and trunk switch very carefully for proper adjustment and operation - they would be my prime suspects. In most cases a low battery will not cause the alarm to sound off - you will have problems with slow crank or no crank long before the voltage is low enough to affect the alarm system at rest.
Best to look up the make and model on the internet and most have the owners manual available for download
You either have a sort or the alarm needs to be reset.
I would check to see if any of your interior lights are on. The reason being, some alarm systems use the door light switch to trigger the alarm. If your interior lights are on there may be some build up crud in the switch. My friends 03 Santa Fe alarm was doing this, it turned out that her hood was not closing all the way from a small fender bender she had. We had to realign the hood. There is also a small sensor under the hood it looks like one of those things they stick in a turkey that pops up when its cooked. ( I am sorry if that sounded redneck but it was my best description :) ) Check if your has a lot of crude around it. To clean these contacts I would use some contact cleaner from Radio shack, try not to spray it directly on paint because it will harm your paint!
