It would be important because of the chemical composition since it's made from oil which is vital for also everything else from glass to transportation in cars and boats. Plastic can be molded and made into unlimited items.

Every day you encounter hundreds of things made with or completely out of plastic. Plastic is used for containers, in computers and cars, in clothing (buttons, zippers, ect), for safety devices and appliances. There are also a huge range in types of plastic from soft, flexible plastic wrap to hard, stiff casings. Since plastic is derived from oil, it is not a sustainable resource. Since it's highly processed, it does not decompose. Knowing about plastic leads to understanding why it's used, how it can be handled (like recycling), and what alternatives there are. Reusable cloth bags can replace plastic bags, glass jars can replace plastic bottles, and there are even organic plastics made from plants that can replace traditional plastic plates and bowls.
