Question:

why is the life of copper pipes 50 yrs? what happens after that?

they say that copper pipes never rust, they say that copper pipes don‘t get the mineral build up that you see in iron pipes, so then why is the life expectancy for my copper pipes 50 yrs. what will happen after those fifty years. when comes time to change out my pipes (however long that may be) what would be the most common reason?i don‘t want to debate about whether the life is 50 yrs., this is just what i was told. my main question is what would be the cause of one day having to change/fix my copper pipes.

Answer:

It mainly depends on the water in your area how long copper will last in your house . If your water was a perfect neutral Ph then your pipes would last longer , but most water is either acidic or alkaline which reacts with the copper and very slowly dissolves the the inside of the pipe especially where the most friction in copper is . near the tees or the 90s . So eventually the copper will start to get pin holes it the walls of the pipe usually on a seam . I have seen copper that only lasted 2 years because there was Boron in the water and it disolved the copper that fast.
