Question:

Why is the 'lock out' button on my boiler lit up?

My heating just suddenly stopped today and the red light went on. I pressed the reset button, like I have done before, but then the heat only comes on for about 10-15 seconds before stopping again. It's a small boiler in my flat - the brand is Glowworm. Anyone have any suggestions about something simple that can be done (by someone who doesn't know much about these things)? What timing! A cold front's coming in from Russia this weekend, and my landlady is hard to track down.signed,Freezing in London

Answer:

This little red button is a warning that something is going wrong. In your case it sounds like the Boiler is over heating, this could be either a sensor fault or more than likely a pump fault. You need to call in a corgi registered engineer as there is no DIY Fix.
If you have a combi boiler which it seems to be. make sure there is water pressure on the boiler. You will see a water gauge and if the gauge shows zero, then you have to recharge the boiler. Look for a flexible pipe under the boiler and you will see a tap on this pipe which lets water into the boiler when you open the tap. Open the tap and watch the gauge. When it reaches , Bar 1 or 1 and a half. Turn the tap off, then relight the boiler. If this doesn't help, then it can be a faulty pump, fan, or PC Board. In which cas you need a Heating engineer to fix it.
clean the flame sensor . i don't know what type of boiler you have but all have some sort of flame sensor . some are called cad cells or electronic eyes look up info on your specific brand and model . it just sounds like flame is not being proven . routine maintenance could prevent this as any heating and cooling unit needs tune-ups just like your car does. a maintenance plan with a quality hvac service can prevent problems before hand
