Question:

will copper harm birds?

Will a copper bell harm a small bird (Cockatiel)? My bird bird plays with a copper bell and his face is getting green. There is no patina on the bell, It's clean. Just worried that he is ingesting copper and it's causing the problem.

Answer:

i haven't ever seen a bird die from playing with/chewing on a copper bell. mine have had theirs for years. maybe your bird goes and gets a drink before he plays with his bell.
YES ~ ! I've never seen a bird playing with copper before.
if you bought your cockatiel untamed (doesn't bite you), it's beak is very sharp and has the ability to scrape copper from a tiny bell such as you said. so yes it can get it very sick try a regular steel bell.
Copper will do no harm to your bird unless it digests it in great quantities, it's beak will not be strong enough to scrape any copper off the bell , but if your bird is showing discolored feathers I suggest you remove the bell as there could be other metals in the bell, for safety.Copper causes a green color but there must be something else causing this.
