Question:

Will lime hurt calves to kill bacteria?

I've recently gotten 2 calves to bottle feed. I've always heard that lime will kill bacteria. So can you put lime down to clean where they have pooped to kill the bacteria? Will it hurt that calves? Also, the calves are twins and we have them housed together in the same pin... Is that okay?

Answer:

Can you please clarify? LOL!
Soils are not classified into groups by their pH, but rather by a number of other reasons like origin, parent material, percentages of sand, silt and clay and so on. Kind of like thermometers, they aren't classified by their temperature at that particular instant because like pH, that is variable.
Lime quantity is in finitely variable, from no lime and highly acidic where addition of lime is advised, through slightly acidic where it may not be helpful to add lime, to essentially neutral, where addition of lime is distinctly not wanted. All soils with neutral pH or above would not want adding lime. But with pH above 8.2 one may consider adding sulphates to reduce pH and make phosphates and micronutrients more accessible. As lime concentration rises into the marle range, it will not be practical to use sulphur to lower pH.
