Question:

Will placing fiberglass over Bondo (body filler) smoothen it out? and will it stick?

I‘m painting a full face helmet but I had to cover the holes in order to protect the foam from the paint vapors. I used Bondo to patch the holes but ended up with a relatively lumpy and rough(ish) surface on the top of the helmet‘s shell, even after alot of sanding with 120 and 60 grit sandpaper it‘s still not consistent and I fear if I paint it now it will end up like crap.1.) If I place fiberglass will it smoothen the surface out? 2.) Are there different kinds of thickness for fiberglass? 3.) Will they bond well since they are both made of polyester?4.) And do I have to fiberglass all parts to make it consistent (even the non-bondoed parts?)Thanks.

Answer:

when working with bondo it is best to file it when it is still soft, i.e. not completely cured. so try using a file then finish with sandpaper.
u should have used fiberglass to start with and left the bondo alone.and no fiber glass will not smooth out a lumpy surface would suggest using a sanding block to get ur helmet smooth. ** another thing is that i hope this is just a decoration or somethingcas if ur helmet has holes in it it will NOT protect u in the event of a crash.u need to buy a new helmet.
I doubt that the helmet shell is made from polyester resins, that was obsolete years ago.The small areas can probably be surfaced with cloth and polyester resin though.Apply a single coat of resin over very fine cloth.Let it cure for a day.Rough sand it with your 60 grit.Apply a smooth coat of bondo.Let it cure for a couple hours.Sand that with your 60 grit then 120 grit the entire shell.Apply several coats of a sanding type lacquer primer.Wet sand it with 400 grit,Prime it again.Wet sand it with 600 grit.NOW,it is ready for paint.
Look at the question my sister found lizard eggs. You should have just covered the spot so the birds couldn't get to them.
