Question:

Will using a non Canon battery hurt my Canon camera?

I have the Canon Powershot SX30 IS, which came with a Canon Li-Ion battery pack. After a battery fiasco at the TXRenFest, I'm searching for good back up batteries. The battery pack that came with it is a 7.4v, 1050mAh, 7.8Wh. The Canon batteries are so expensive! I've found several others that range from $7 - $15 (Canon is $30 - $70).My question is, will using a non Canon battery hurt my camera?

Answer:

I have several non-canon battery packs for my cameras and I have loved them. Some of them perform better than the Canon's. As long as it is for your camera I wouldn't worry about it.
I've used other brands for my Canon dslr cameras as well but now, nearly 2-years later, I'm beginning to have problems with them. One of them has swollen some and is too tight for the battery chamber. So I've gone back to Canon. I just bought 2 new lp e5 batteries refurbished from Amazon. They are Canon batteries so we'll see how refurbished holds up.
Such is the way of Canon. Of course yes, you can use other battery brands. You can even get a higher mAh rating than the original for longer lasting power. You can't change th 7.4v rating though. Just understand that any malfunction on the camera's part will be blamed on that non-Canon accessory you installed when you bring the camera for servicing at Canon's authorized service center.
