With Copper worth over $2.00 a pound are people steeling Copper wire?

Answer:

yes, they are stealing copper. I have seen copper wire cut down from live utility lines, copper plumbing stolen from plumbing inside churches, copper coils from air conditioners and anything else with copper in it stolen. In detroit they even stole manhole covers for the scrap iron. They steal bronze plaques from statues and catalytic converters from schoolbuses. It is a shame too, because they might get $15.00 for the scarp, but they cause thousands in damage.
I'm not sure of the price of copper here (in Hawaii) but almost every week there is reports in the news of people being killed or seriously electrocuted from stealing the wire from parks, street lights, etc. Stupid, stupid people.
Yep, here in Denver whenever a house goes on the market (it's empty) people break in and steel all the copper wiring and pipes. It's become a huge problem. People are leaving pit bulls and Rottweilers in the houses to protect them.
This happens in the US? In my country, which not long ago joined the EU, there are some Gypsy gangs doing this for years, some of them became extremely rich and started legal business. They used to steal copper not only from the telephone wires, but from anything that contain copper. Some left whole blocks without phones or electricity.
Good for them. It isnt a new thing. Back in the 1970s the same thing happened. Maybe we need to find a different conductor for our electricity.
