Question:

Would a ERG valve cause sputtering or hesitating on my pontiac firebird?

My car has been sputtering and hesitating when I hit the gas. My friend's boyfriend says it is a bad erg valve does that sound right?

Answer:

i would say fill up with hightest put injector cleaner and run some dry gas. that will clean your injectors and make sure there is no water in the gas. change your fuel filter. check a plug. does it look ok? what year? miles?
Its EGR vavle. it is an emissions administration gadget. It stands for exhaust gasoline recuculation. It sends countless the exhasut from the engine returned by using. it is going to reason your difficulty. it is user-friendly because of the fact they gets clogged with carbon over the years and stop working. i might replace it to save on gasoline and it isnt extraordinarily expenisve to do or have completed.
If the EGR valve is opening on Acceleration yes this would cause hesitation, but you have to find out why it is opening if it is.If there is a solenoid controlling the EGR valve this might be the problem. If you can put your finger under the EGR valve when the engine is idling, rev then engine up in park,if you feel the valve opening it is most likly the solenoid
An EGR valve being open will cause mostly idle problems and light throttle/initial take-off problems...mostly when you have a high manifold vacuum is when you end up with problems because of a sticking EGR valve. Just remove the valve and clean it by soaking it in something like B-12 Chemtool. I can garuntee you that valve is probably disgustingly full of carbon depending on the year.
