Question:

Would the gap grow wider or more narrow as the metal expands if you were to heat the metal and explain?

Take a copper ring that looks like an O and cut a segment so it looks like the letter C.

Answer:

hmm good question, I would guess that it would be easier to expand and fill the gap, but it might just grow to scale.
Incubate them justi ncase, they may be fertile, good luck! Adam
I assume you are looking at a thermal switch of some type. These often made from compound bars. They are made from two types of thin metal strips, brazed together, surface to surface. The two types have different rates of expansion when they are heated. Suppose we consider the bars, one of copper and the other of iron. Copper expands faster than iron, so when heated, the bar will bend towards the iron. If the terminal is on he iron side it will close as it is heated. If the terminal is on the copper side, it will widen as the bar is heated.
