Question:

Zinc and copper?

I want to take optizinc cus it's the most bioavailable. But I read zinc and copper interfere with eachother's absorption, they're antangonistic. So why do I see optizinc with copper(makes no sense). Would it be better to take optizinc and copper at different times. I want to take 60 mg of optizinc.

Answer:

Zinc inhibits copper absorption. Copper deficiency can result in anemia, lower levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol, or cardiac arrhythmias.28 29 30 Copper intake should be increased if zinc supplementation continues for more than a few days (except for people with Wilson’s disease).31 Some sources recommend a 10:1 ratio of zinc to copper. Evidence suggests that no more that 2 mg of copper per day is needed to prevent zinc-induced copper deficiency. Many zinc supplements include copper in the formulation to prevent zinc-induced copper deficiency. Zinc-induced copper deficiency has been reported to cause reversible anemia and suppression of bone marrow. Yes, Zinc and copper do not like each other and fight for the absorption by the body. You need to take Zinc and copper seperately but you need more Zinc than copper. Your body requires 1 -2 mg of copper but at least 15mg of Zinc per day. Copper is also more available for intake than Zinc in our daily diet and usually we need to supplement with Zinc. In South Africa there is a Zinc product called Zinplex and it is cheap.
Go for the Zinc.
