Question:

92 Lumina Transmission Maintenance?

Hi i have a 92 Chev Lumina, with 150k miles, does it even pay to attempt a transmission flush with so many miles?

Answer:

I agree with the above posts. But you wont have to replace the steel lines, just flush them good.
Provided the entire system was not filled with motor oil (which thickens in the deep cold or cold temps not designed to flow in brake lines and in large amounts will distort rubbers, and seals in the system) I would drain the entire system out, disconnect the master at the lines remove it and dump out the fluid ,re-install master, fill with fresh fluid bleed the master then reconnect the lines to it ,Then bleed from farthest wheel back to closest to clear out any contaminated fluid 10 times per wheel [fluid will run as clear as fluid in the bottle] .It should not be cloudy at all once cleaned out and bled .Be sure to have someone watching and adding fluid at intervals during bleeding so as to not bleed the master dry ,or you will have to start over .
generally approximately 4 quarts is going into maximum motor vehicle transmissions. a manner you're able to do it rather is verify the dip stick after 3 to 4 quarts have been put in. Then slowly upload extra until it rather is showing sturdy. bear in suggestions, transmission fluid is checked with motor vehicle working.
Given the fact it more than likely has the 700R4 piece of junk transmission GM employes in most of it's vehicles anything you do as far as maintainence would be of great value! If it's never been serviced in 150,000 miles well then I'd say you probably passed the point of no return but certainly wouldn't hurt anyway! A good preventative maintainence program is like a high yield bank account- just keeps giving back what you put into it!!!! Poor maintainence is like a disease that just keeps draining your wallet!
DO NOT HAVE IT FLUSHED unless you want to buy a rebuilt transmission. Transmission fluid is a very high detergent oil and by flushing an old worn transmission with fresh fluid you will wash away all the clutch material that is keeping the transmission working. All that grit will get stuck in the valve body orifices and electronics and your transmission will fail. Why do you think transmission rebuild shops like Aamco sell power flushes, because they want your transmission to last? No, you sign a waiver and their is a good chance you will have transmission problems very soon after. Millions of dollars are spent advertising a $99.00 service, do you think anyone will make money that way? A flush is fine if it is done every 30,000 miles from new otherwise you are only asking for trouble. P.S not a clue does not have a clue about any thing I have read his answers to numerous questions. A front wheel drive lumina does not use a rear wheel drive transmission. Get A Clue.
