Question:

97 Dodge Dakota transmission interchange.?

I‘ve got a 97 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with a 318 and auto trans. The transmission is acting up and was wondering what other transmissions will interchange. Would like to convert it to a 5 speed manual. I‘ve heard about jeep transmissions, etc. but would like confirmation about anything that will work. Thanks

Answer:

Prolly ATF+4 for fluid and I think they only use one model of transmission with the 5.2l but I'm not sure if I'm not always 100% sure I call dodge and give them my vin and they tell me what it came with when it was manufactured but if u bought it used someone might of changed it

IMHO, you're better off having the transmission repaired, or replaced with another of the same model, or selling the truck and getting a new one. Changing the transmission to a manual, or trying to adapt another one to fit is usually a long, drawn-out process of chasing down installation/conversion problems, routing linkages where none ever were before, etc. And you should have a well equipped shop, and are an experienced mechanic or have one to help you. The fact that you're asking tells me you may have neither. If you really want a manual transmission, it will probably be a lot easier to sell this vehicle and buy one that has a manual that grew there.
