Question:

A Balanced Equine Diet. having difficulties creating one. :(?

Hello. I have spent forever trying to figure out how much to feed my horses. My pony is far too overweight and my horse, a little under (was when we bought him). I‘ve read books and all sorts to figure it all out, but I don‘t have the facilities to choose how much grass my horses graze on, and what type. They‘re just in a paddock agisting with other horses with a reasonable amount of grass. This is what I‘m feeding them each, and what with.30g Dolomite, 15g Rosehip Granules, 15g Seaweed Meal, 30g Garlic Granules, 3/4 cup Black Sunflower Seeds, 60mL Apple Cider Vinegar. /// 13.2hh Welsh (Section B) 11yo mare (490.2kg) gets 800g Mixed Chaff (Lucerne + Wheaten). /// 15.2hh Standardbred 9yo gelding (659.6kg) gets 1100g Mixed Chaff (Lucerne + Wheaten). I feed and ride (for about an hour) every time I see them, once every two or three days. Could somebody please advise me the correct amount to be feeding my horses. Thankyou so much!

Answer:

Your horses should be getting 1/2 lb of feed per 100 lbs of body weight. Do not follow the coffee can measurements- different types of feed weigh different. So your half a coffee can of one feed, may not weigh as much as your equines should be getting. You should go to your local feed store and get a scale and then measure your feed out so you know your horse is getting the right amount. NEVER feed more than 5 lbs per feeding. And I'd recommend trying a complete feed such as strategy or safe choice. Also pick a high quality horse hay- such as coastal or an alfalfa hay. My horses get one flake of each at morning and night time feedings. Some of my horses will get free choice hay. You should also keep a salt and mineral block with your horses next to a fresh supply of water. Also put loose salt in a bin available to your horses. Salt blocks were designed for cows and a horse will stop licking even if they didn't have enough because their tongues hurt.
Forget the dolomite and the vinegar and the granuels. That would drive anyone crazy. If you have a fat pony that lives in the field 24/7 just give him one small coffee can of regular grain only on the days you ride him. I haven't had to bring a skinny horse to good weight so I can't help you there. For the pony Just a scoop should do no measuering in grams or pounds the horses should have a constant supply of grass or hay all day.
PLEASE!Call your local Ag Counsel, your University Veterinary School, and the Veterinary they recommend.
