Question:

Are transmission fluid flushes really necessary?

For a ‘96 Toyota Camry. The transmission has started slipping, but not very often. Should I get the transmission flushed, or just replaced with new fluid and a new filter. I read that flushes aren‘t necessary Thanks!

Answer:

For sure the transmission fluid hasn't got anything to do with the mild vibrations you're feeling in the steering wheel but the air pressure the wheels being properly balanced can cause such things or something loose in the steering or a faulty tire belt etc. The only thing I'd say really about the flushing of the transmission is if it's a factory warranty requirement then get it done but I recommend since the dealership can in the future deny etc any type of warranty coverage or work due to the transmission flush not being done by a dealership , go to a dealership you like and have them do it that way they have to stand behind their warranty and workmanship etc. Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you've not tried rotating the tires yet do that but be sure the tire pressures and wheels are fully balanced and have the front end checked beforehand.
I would get it flushed new fluid since it has started slipping.
Try this and Im sure you will enjoy this. I work as a Honda mechanic, I am no Toyota expert. However, the Japanese cars have very sensitive transmissions and only recommend that you use the manufactures transmission fluid. Which is very important on Honda's and possibly Toyota's. Countless times I have had cars come in that had transmission flushes because that transmission was acting up and the transmission shop didn't use the manufacture's fluid. Therefore the problem just got a bit worse. If I were you, I would drive to the local Toyota dealership and buy enough Toyota transmission fluid to change twice. drain the fluid out and refill with Toyota fluid, then drive for 30 miles or so. Drain the fluid and refill with the last bit of fluid. I have done this to Honda's and it helps the transmission 75% of the time when the transmission is showing signs of failure. The manufacture has specially formulated this fluid and has certain additives in it for your transmission. What is the worst that can happen, your transmission continue to slip. I would consult with the people about Toyota when you go there and tell them the last time your transmission fluid was changed and see if its a good idea to change it now. For instance if you have not changed your fluid for 150,000 miles its not a good idea to change it, since Transmission fluid is a form of detergent and new fluid will most likely clog up the internal filter in the transmission.
