Question:

Automatic garage door won't operate?

I have power, it worked once this morning and I do hear a humming noise, but, the MOTOR sounds like it's not activating itself, again, there is a humming noise, hence, the circuit board appears to be getting the message to close door, however,it's not.Could it be a burnt motor or circuit board issue?.Thank you folks...

Answer:

well these days systems have a lot of safety features . check the door its self some doors stop operating if it thinks some thing is under it so you may have to adjust it by putting a 2x4 under it than playing with the adjustment then it could be the sensors on both sides at the bottom of the door examine them closely if they have led's on them then wave your hand pass them to see if they are operating properly PS: check all the fail safes first than ask your next question
The one answer of unhooking your trolley to see if it closes is a bad idea! If the spring is broke the door will slam down very hard. This could damage the door and kill anything it comes down on. If you do this only do so after making sure your springs are not broken. Even one broken spring will cause the symptoms you describe. Always replace both spring when you replace them.
The motor could have failed or the door could be jammed. Release the trolley to see if the door will close manually then try to activate the opener with no load to see if it will move. If not, carefully try to move the mechanism by hand while the motor is humming to make sure the chain or belt isn't bound. Those tests should narrow your search for the exact problem.
Check your springs on the door. If one broke, the motor would not be able to lift your door and would just hum. Check for any misalignment or ****** rollers. If the motor is humming then your circuit board is likely working right. The motor may be bad but it did work this morning. Tap the motor or CAREFULLY use something to turn the motor, while it is trying to run. If it works while doing that then you probably do have a bad motor.
Again people, brand, type, model, year of manufacture... Important info to have! Disconnect the door from the opener and try opening and closing it by hand. If the door works properly, then the problem is in the opener. If it's a chain or belt drive, and you hear the motor running, but the chain/belt doesn't move, then the drive gear is shot (Chamberlain, Sears, Liftmaster). If it's a Genie, and the motor runs but the screw doesn't turn, either the fiber screw-to-motor shaft adapter is stripped, or one of the screw clips is broken. If you only hear humming, there may be a bad relay or motor capacitor in the unit. If the unit is more than 9 or 10 years old, don't waste money having it repaired. Replace it. Otherwise, you'll probably need a professional to diagnose it.
